Superman Returns – Good Only if Born After 1975

June 30, 2006

superman.jpgHaving read many reviews of the newly released Superman Returns, i wasn’t expecting much from film when i entered the theater. Two and a half hours later, i left feeling completely entertained and fulfilled. Feeling misled by many critics, i began to wonder why the movie was being panned by critics i generally trusted. Going back to the reviews, i found that almost every critic that gave the movie a compared it to the first two originals.

For instance the New York Times can help but repeatedly discuss the greatness of Christopher Reeve and Gene Hackman’s roles rather than the effectiveness and charm of Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth. For instance, the NYT review actually lists all the characters of the 1978 film and only after praising the original storyline and cast does it briefly mention the actual participants in the current film:

Released in 1978, that film ushered Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s original comic creation into the blockbuster age with frothy wit and a cast that included Marlon Brando in a creamy scoop of white hair and Gene Hackman in clover. Christopher Reeve, of course, wore the cape and tights, while Margot Kidder did a fine approximation of the young Katharine Hepburn at her most coltish. Valerie Perrine and Ned Beatty added some laughs, while Glenn Ford supplied a pinch of gravitas.

The NYT’s infatuation with Reeve continues later in the article:

Mr. Reeve worked the tonal changes with similar ease, delivering a superhero whose earnestness was strategically offset by his fumbling, bumbling, all-too-human twin, who was just the ticket for the post-Watergate, pre-Indiana Jones moment. Mr. Singer’s Superman, played by Brandon Routh, is a hero of rather different emotional colors, most muted……Part of the charm of Mr. Reeve’s interpretation was that a guy this impossibly handsome, who literally towers over everyone in the office, could hide behind a slouch and oversize eyeglasses.

The NYT is not the only review to do this. Roger Ebert’s review is the same:

Routh may have been cast because he looks a little like Reeve, but there are times when he looks more like an action figure; were effects used to make him seem built from synthetics? We remember the chemistry between Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder (Lois Lane) in the original “Superman” movie, and then observe how their counterparts are tongue-tied in this one. If they had a real romance (and they did), has it left them with nothing more than wistful looks and awkward small talk?

Of course, Lois doesn’t remember the romance between her and Superman because he erased it at the end of S2, but apparently Ebert forgot that point.

What gets me about these constant comparisons to the past films is that, as a 28 year old, i don’t remember them. The first and second films came out when i was 8 months old and 2 years old. And, anyone younger than me probably doesn’t remember them nor think fondly of them. Thus, you have 2 brand new generations of viewers who are experiencing a modern Superman film for the first time. It seems that older reviewers get caught up in their own nostalgia when reviewing a remake and i’m sure older film-goers may agree with them, but for me these reviews prove the generational gap just as much as the reviews of Dumb & Dumber did when that film came out in the mid-90’s and was generally panned by all viewers.

The long and short of it – is Superman it a classic? Definitely not. But it is a very enjoyable popcorn movie and is more than enough to make the July 4th movie going experience worthwhile, as long as you haven’t seen the originals and can barely remember the Ronald Regan presidency.

    Hi;
I saw the new Superman movie wed night at special 10 pm showing, not enough action after the first hour, too long, and I kept looking at my watch during the last 45 minutes. This movie is slow and to emotional with clark and louis, her new boyfriend, and the little boy. What happened to Superman the action figure? I can’t ait for Spiderman III, it won’t be a drag………………….

I saw the movie tonight–thought it was great! Saw the other 2 and thought this one was suberb–nice touch for Superman to have a son with LL–and thought it was great that the movie was dedicated to Christopher and Dana Reeve at the beginning of the credits. This Superman looked a lot like C Reeve!

To all that forget. Superman is Superman. As in many things in life it takes something more than jut cold reality for use to have a little bit of fun. so what if it is unreal. It never was to have been real. These were stories that allowed our imagination to see something beyond our daily lifes. Whether plasable or not why can we today not enjoy fantisy. Why must we try to root things in reality. This current movie lives up to all the past series, comics, and movies that have come before. Enjoy and wish that we actually had a SUPERMAN. In reality I think we have millions. Our military, police, firemen, ETC.

I disagree with the statement that people born after the first two superman movies won’t like them. I grew up on the first two superman movies and I still like them immensely. That being said I thought this new version was fantastic, I really like superman as a character and I think this new movie got just about all of it right, especially as a continuation of sorts from the first two movies. The only minor gripe is that Brandon Routh could have been a little bit more geeky and slouchy as Clark Kent, (but he did say Swell) but other than that I thought this movie got just about every element dead on, if you like superman if you like the first two super man movies watch this one, keep an open mind and I think you could be very entertaining.

Why can’t people except change? I’m 44 years old and have seen the original Superman movies. Sure the 1978 Superman was and remains a terrific movie with a great cast and, for the times, an enjoyable special effects ride. Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder and Gene Hackman were fantastic as the main leads and I enjoy watching the movie even to this day. Having said that, the current Superman Returns was a superb comeback movie with a respectful homage to what the original had done. Brandon Bryan Singer, Routh and Kevin Spacey brought the characters back to life in up-to-date versions that were very enjoyable to watch. I felt as excited to watch the new version as I did when I watched the 1978 version. Welcome back Superman and I look forward to future adventures with the new cast.

    Wow,
Talk about bashing old people. Maybe Something along the line of “this Superman movie isn’t a remake but actually follows the story set forth by the source material (comic books)”would be a better review. In the comic Superman leaves to discover if krypton has really been destroied. I haven’t seen it yet but I hope the movie isn’t just special effects. They can help when not the centerpiece of a movie. I thought Batman Begins was much better than any of the four previous ones, it wasn’t a remake was it? I believe it was its own movie. Ultimately the comics aren’t as “Comic Bookie” as the movies have been. So when the movies aren’t I’m happy to watch them.

I’m 20 years old, I never saw the original movies, but I still say this film was just mediocre at best. Clark/Superman barely spoke a word, Lois was bland and I felt no chemistry whatsoever between Lois and Superman (and from what I gathered, at least 3/4 of the movie was centered around their relationship) . Lex was more comic relief than a sinister villain. There was no menace from him. So as an action movie, it fails as well, at least for me. You don’t have to be diehard fans of the comics or the original movies to trash this film. Even compared to the recent animated series, this movie’s plot and the way it portrayed the characters are weak in comparison. The only thing it had going for it was the awesome special effects. Hopefully, any planned sequel will focus a lot more on the script and make the Man of Steel less of a cardboard cutout.

The truth is, if Lois Lane’s memory was erased, Than how could she know that Superman is the father of her son? And why is Lois Lane younger? What did Superman do, reverse time again? I loved the movie, great special effects, but again, some of the story line didn’t make sense.

This is a new Superman for a new generation, from what I’ve heard via the reviews. No, I haven’t seen it. And when I do I don’t expect it to continue on the “Reeve legacy.” It is a MOVIE. Superman has been around since 1939… many people have taken on the role, and even before this most recent incarnation the character has been a popular one in our culture. There was “Lois & Clark” and “Smallville” on TV, songs by MANY music groups (Five For Fighting and REM instantly come to mind) and to say nothing of the comic books which have been published.

Two things, Mike: 1) I heard it’s a very entertaining movie. I’m glad you liked it and I look forward to getting a chance to see it too. 2) Don’t pay much mind to what the “critics” have to say about it. Though a lot of these people have been around for a long time, I certainly don’t decide to go see / not go see a movie if grumpy old Roger Ebert says something about it! I’ve come to realize his tastes are COMPLETELY different than mine! (And I’m from the Chicago area, get to read his rag’s column every week.)

In Superman 4, Lois tells Clark that she regained her memory. I thought the new movie was generally VERY slow, interspersed periodically with some very good action sequences. As a matter of fact, that is exactly what I thought of the “original” 1978 C. Reeve version when I saw that one, too.

When Christopher and Margo slept together as Superman and Lois, “out of wedlock”, that
ended it for me. I have read Superman Comics since the first and he and she would never have done this. This was Holllywood ruining another good movie. Haven’t seen the new movies as it sounds like they have a son and they still aren’t married. Is that true. Oh well, I will remember the real Superman from the days when good morals were held in high regard by most people.

This is a complex topic. You have to consider the mechanics of “marriage” are different on Krypton. Lois had to accept another perspective other then the one she acquired on our home planet.

lets see….the arguement of which ‘Superman’ movie was better. Well, folks…that is a matter of opinion. I have an idea…how about not worrying about what someone else says about the film, and go see it and form your own opinion. Oh, wait…I am talking to the modern american….silly me…they can’t form their own opinions…

Saw the movie. It was GREAT! Did i mention it was GREAT! This made all the other superman movies look like the Sunday Funny Papers. Not that I didn’t enjoy the old superman movies and shows. I am 51 and still enjoy the reruns and even “Smallville”. This movie puts so many things in perspective and I love the way they have incorporated some of the actions of the original superman into this one. I think this Superman looks like Reeves, but he acts like the original television actor.

Great movie, great effects. My family left inspired! Thanks Superman!

By the way, did I mention the movie was GREAT!

tonight was pondering about seeing it but wasn’t because we probably read the same reviews. Even though the movies have the same title, I personally wouldn’t compare them. Different decades.. Thanks, might check it out

I basically grew up with Superman, was old enough to appreciate the original film in 78 and still remember it…. I loved it…. and same goes for the new Superman, but there is only 1 thing that bugs me about the new movie….. AGE!!! Since this movie is supposed to be a continuation from Superman 2, I expect Superman (aka Clark Kent) and Lois Lane to actually be 5 years older than they were at the end of the previous picture… however they seem to be 5 years younger!!! AND the boy was born during this 5 year absense, however he seemed quite a bit older than that…. and they talked about how well he was doing in school (most children don’t even start school till they are 5 or even 6) Including that he didn’t do to well in gym…. But aside from that faux pas the movie was EXCELLENT and definately worth the price of admission

I must say that I think the relationship between Lois and Clark is definitely different in Superman Returns. Lois’s character is much more reserved and less energetic. I really enjoyed Superman Returns, but it is certainly different from the original.
